Supporting sustainable fishing

Saving a precious resource

Sustainability may be the buzz word of the moment, but at Three Oceans it has been a key part of our business for years.

We work hard with our suppliers across the worlds oceans to make sure the fish we buy is sustainable. By that we mean that fish stocks can replenish and that our procurement does not contribute to over fishing in any particular area or species.

We are monitored and certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), but we strive to exceed these high standards and set our own sustainability targets to ensure what we do will benefit the wider industry in the long term.

At Three Oceans we take our part in the 'chain of custody' of several key species very seriously and we have established excellent working relationships with partner fisheries worldwide.

The demand for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) approved products is increasing, as consumers become more aware of the issues of over-fishing and the damage done to fish stocks and the environment. Increasingly our customers are looking for products which have been caught and processed in a responsible way, and MSC certification is the best way of proving that.

The problem

Unsustainable fishing - caused by poor fisheries management and wasteful, destructive fishing practices - were decimating the world's fisheries, as well as destroying marine habitats and killing billions of unwanted fish and other marine animals each year.

As a result, the future of the fishing industry was threatened - as were the already endangered marine species and habitats, and the livelihoods and food security of millions of people.

Part of the solution

We actively support the issues of sustainability and marine stewardship. Working closely with our fishery partners around the world we can help to:

  • Recognise and reward good fishery management.
  • Work with fishery and commercial partners to build a market for sustainable seafood.
  • Provide an easy way for buyers and consumers to identify sustainably caught seafood.

Promoting sustainable seafood

We are working closely with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to help raise awareness and improve demand for sustainable products from their source to the point of consumption, or 'the chain of custody'. This includes fishing, transporting, trading, processing, packaging, selling and retailing, including in the restaurant and food service sectors.

We support the work of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to certify sustainable marine fisheries around the world.

Promoting sustainable seafood within our industry

Working with buyers in the food service and retail sectors to encourage demand for MSC-certified products.

International procurement and primary processors

We work closely with our processing and fishery partners around the world to promote stronger purchasing guidelines and a greater variety of sustainably sourced and MSC-certified products. We currently have 24 MSC SKUs (Stock Keeping Units), with many more in development.

Education for future generations

Helping schools and local authorities to promote the importance of sutainable seafood alongside our quest to improve the healthy fish content of school menus. We have introduced our friendly fish character - Captain Sustainable - to help us get the message accross.
