Helping to tackle child poverty through Meals and More

Three Oceans are proud to announce that we are working in partnership with our long term client Brakes, through their new charity initiative Meals & More, to help tackle the issue of child poverty in the UK.

During the summer school holidays, many children who are entitled to free school meals during term time, are left without regular access to healthy, nutritious food and it is this issue that we, in partnership with Brakes are focussing on.

Meals & More is a long term initiative to help feed hungry children outside of school term time to fill the holiday hunger gap. The programe provides financial support, low cost food, volunteers and much more to local holiday clubs that provide a safe, constructive environment during the school breaks. Three Oceans are sponsoring clubs that will be delivered through MakeLunch, an established charity, that uses its UK wide network of churches and community lunch kitchens and volunteers to help feed hungry children.

The sad reality is that today, 9 children in every primary school class are living in poverty. That’s a staggering 3.9million, and child poverty is projected to rise to 4.7million by 2020. These are horrifying facts that we are committed to doing something about - child poverty is everyone's responsibility.

As a long term supplier of Brakes, Three Oceans are helping to tackle holiday hunger in our local Hull community. Throughout the summer holidays, we have been working alongside MakeLunch volunteers as part of the Meals & More initiative, at their newly opened Holiday Lunch Kitchen at the Mosaic Church, Endike Lane, Hull.

We provide much needed additional volunteer support from our team as well as nutrition advice, valuable school meal experience and of course plenty of healthy fish meals.

To open the new Lunch Kitchen, the MakeLunch team invited local children to come along to a packed morning of fun activities which included a hot, healthy, nutritious lunch that we helped to provide and also helped serve to the children.

The opening event proved to be a great success with clean plates, full bellies and happy smiling faces all around; we were proud to be a part of this amazing and much needed community initiative.

It was such a privilege and a humbling experience. The children were so bubbly, polite and very enthusiastic, all leaving with big smiles asking if they could come back the next day. You could feel the buzz and I’m sure this Lunch Kitchen will be bursting with happy children all summer,” said Geoff Druce, Three Oceans’ Sales Director, who attended the opening event and is actively involved in the Meals & More initiative.

Following the huge success of the opening event, we look forward to continuing our support to this great cause and giving back to our Hull community and we will be supporting and attending additional dates throughout the school summer holidays and beyond.
